Professional Registration Program

NYSASBO has developed this voluntary program of professional registration in order to provide a recognized standard of competence for school business administrators, officials and office specialists eligible for NYSASBO membership.

Upon application, all members who meet the standards and qualifications established by the NYSASBO Board of Directors shall be registered for a four-year period. Registrants must apply for renewal every four years to maintain their professional designation.

To renew the designated registration for subsequent four-year periods, the recipient must meet the continuing eligibility requirements as established by the NYSASBO Board of Directors.

Questions & Answers

Who can apply to obtain a professional registration?

The professional registration program administered by the NYSASBO is open to all school district personnel working in the business office. Clerks, treasurers, business officials, business administrators and superintendents all have access to this voluntary program, which was created to provide a recognized standard of competence to eligible NYSASBO members.

Do I have to be a NYSASBO member to apply?

Yes. To obtain your initial professional registration, you must be- and have been- a current active NYSASBO member for the immediate four years prior to your application.

Are there any other requirements that I should meet before I apply?

Yes. You must have been employed on a full-time basis in the school district you are applying from, for four (4) consecutive years during the past five-years.

What if I can’t meet the four-year employment requirement because I moved districts?

If you can demonstrate that you received tenure in your previous district and left for promotional purposes, consideration will be given to waiving this requirement. This consideration will be given at the Executive Directors discretion.

After membership requirements & employment requirements, what else do I need to obtain my professional designation?

To obtain your designation you need only submit your duly completed initial application form, a current organization chart for your school district, your job description, a verification by your employer, along with your payment.

How much does it cost?

Initial applications for professional designation cost $50.

Do I have to renew every year?

No. Applications for the renewal of the professional designation are required upon the fourth anniversary of obtaining the designation.

Which designation is best for me?

There are three professional designations to choose from: NYSRSBA, NYSRSBO and NYSRSBOS.

Professionals possessing a Master’s Degree or Master’s Equivalent, and working as chief business officers, apply for the New York State Registered School Business Administrator (NYSRSBA) designation. They may be classified or certified employees.

Applicants who have earned a Bachelor’s Degree who have system-wide administrative and/or supervisory responsibility in three areas of specialization, obtain a New York State Registered School Business Official (NYSRSBO) designation.

Applicants who have system-wide administrative and/or supervisory responsibility in one or more areas of specialization are granted a New York State Registered School Business Office Specialist (NYSRSBOS) designation.

If I have an NYSRSBO, and now qualify for an NYSRSBA, can I have both?

No. Registrants may hold only one registration at a time.

What are the areas of specialization?

There are currently 22 areas of specialization that may be credited towards your application. They include:

Auditing, Child Accounting, Cash Management & Investments, Data Processing/Information Technology, Debt Service & Capital Fund Management, Financial Accounting, Financial Planning & Budgeting, Food Service Operations, Insurance/Risk Management, Maintenance of Plant, Negotiation, Office Management, Operations of Plant, Payroll Accounting, Personnel Management, Pupil Transportation Management, Purchasing & Supply Management, Real Estate & Fixed Asset Management, School & Community Relations, School Plant Planning & Construction Supervisor, School Store Management, and Tax Administration.

Other areas of specializing may be considered by applying to the Executive Director.

What’s the Point Accumulator all about?

The point accumulator is to be used for professional designation renewal only.

What if I completed the Point Accumulator requirements and submitted it along with my initial application?

Terrific! But you didn’t need to. You will need to obtain a new point accumulator to keep track of your activities in the next four years.

So what do I do now?

Once you’ve obtained your professional designation, keep track of point-granting activities in your Point Accumulator. You will need to submit it when you apply for renewal of your designation.

How many points do I need to collect?

NYSRSBA and NYSRSBO professional designees need to accumulate 24 points in the four-year period following the granting of their designation, and every four-year period thereafter. NYSRSBOS designees need to accumulate 20 points for the same periods.

How do I get points?

Membership in NYSASBO, NYSASBO State Chapters and ASBO International is worth points for each year of membership. Likewise, presentation at any of these levels will earn points for each. Attendance at NYSASBO or ASBO International conferences, seminars and/or workshops merits points, as does attendance at any other annual meeting/seminar sponsored by NYSASBO recognized organizations. Publication of articles is a means of earning points, as is leadership service in ASBO International and/or NYSASBO, whether at the State or Chapter level. Community involvement is credited, as are any awards or recognitions in the field of school business you may earn.

What if I don’t renew my application after four years?

Seven months prior to the expiration of your professional designation, you will be informed of the pending lapse and asked to submit your renewal application form and documentation. Failure to renew will result in revocation of the designation, following communications from NYSASBO informing you of the action to be taken.

What if I retire?

Members holding a registered status at the time of retirement may retain that designation without renewal so long as NYSASBO membership is retained.
