New Registration and Continuing Education Requirements Effective July 1, 2016
Beginning with the 2016-17 school year, a new state law requires that permanent and professional classroom teachers, educational leaders (including SBO’s) and Level III Teaching Assistant certificate holders register with SED every five years. Only those with professional certificates (i.e. SDBL) must successfully complete 100 hours of Continuing Teacher and Leader Education (CTLE) requirements every five years. School business officials with SDA and SBA credentials are considered permanent certificate holders and are not required to complete the professional development component, but still must register.
Registration is now open on the online TEACH system, on a staggered basis, for any holder of a valid teaching certificate in classroom teaching service, teaching assistant or educational leadership. Individuals whose certificates were issued before July 1, 2016 will apply for initial registration during the 2016-2017 school year during their month of birth, and renew their registration every five years. Individuals whose certificates are issued after that will be automatically registered and will be required to re-register in five years. Read the full press release here, and access the TEACH online system here.
Professional certificate holders (SDBL) must keep a record of their completed CTLE in case of random audit by SED. NYSASBO keeps a record of every continuing education program members participate in and can provide such a record upon request.
