New York State Health Care Reform…Does it Affect Your Plan?
Recent legislation mandates that COBRA continuation coverage offered through health insurance policies in New York State be extended from 18 months to 36 months. Legislation also requires that unmarried dependent children be offered coverage through age 29, regardless of their financial dependence on their parents. This legislation applies to INSURED plans which are issued in New York State and subject to New York State regulations. SELF FUNDED plans which are subject to federal regulations are NOT affected by this mandate.
MTA Tax to be a separate line item on Suffolk County Tax Bills
The Suffolk County Legislature has recently authorized a separate line on county property tax bills to make clear to taxpayers the payroll tax is a state mandate to fund the MTA. What was interesting in the article was the last paragraph:
"County Lawmakers said they will allow other taxing districts affected by the MTA payroll tax - towns, villages, school districts, etc. - to also add their portion of the MTA payroll tax to the tax bills."

Deadline for Reporting Attorney Information Extended
Last Friday, I wrote on the Reporter Blog that the Attorney General's Office was working on an online form for school districts and BOCES to use to report certain information regarding the use of attorneys. Late this afternoon, I was informed that the AG's Office, OSC, and SED are still working on a form and that the the reporting deadline has been EXTENDED TO OCTOBER 9th.
I expect to receive further information on how to file the report within the next few weeks.
SBO Academy
Registrations are being accepted to the SBO Leadership Academy until
August 14. There is a shortage of attendees and appreciate you
encouraging colleagues who have not attended to apply. The cost is $750
with $500 from the district and $250 from the participants. The first
session is September 23-25 in Victor NY near Rochester and the second
session is November 5-6 at West Point. Applications were mailed in May
or are available by calling 518.434.2281.

Budget Vote 2009
I would like to wish everyone success in their budget votes on Tuesday! It has been an extraordinary year in developing our budgets, but I am hopeful that many people will recognize our efforts in a positive manner.
MTA Tax Rally
A rally is tentatively scheduled for Saturday, March 21 at 11:00 to address the proposed MTA tax. The rally will be held at Newfield High School in Selden.
