The Future of the Profession

Introduction

As times change, professions evolve. The characteristics that define many professions – such as what professionals need to do, and what they need to know – are much different now than they were just a few years ago. This is certainly true of the school business management profession. In fact, given certain challenges and uncertainties affecting school business officials, it is not a stretch to view the school business management profession as being at a crossroads. The profession will look different 3-5-10 years from now. For good or for bad, the mold will be cast by those who have a strong interest and stake in what the profession will look like. NYSASBO believes school business officials themselves are best positioned to envision what the profession will look like in the future and what is necessary to achieve that vision. Because of this, NYSASBO is pursuing the Future of the Profession project and in the following pages, we will examine the factors impacting the profession.

Their needs to be a forum with active dialogue with all the stakeholders particularly School Boards and NYCOSS to establish the disciplines of the respective groups. School Boards need to focus on policy and not become the administrators. Superintendents need to exhibit leadership and not micromanage the Business Officials resopnsiblities.
