Call to Action: Proposed 2009-2010 Aid Freeze

As you may be aware, the Governor's 2010-2011 Executive Budget and the more recent Assembly version propose a freeze in the school aid database that will significantly impact current year aid for special education services. NYSASBO, through the Government Relations Committee, has prepared the sample letter below that we encourage you to use in contacting your legislators. Governor Continues to Threaten School Aid Delays/Cuts - NYSASBO Prepared to Join Lawsuit Against Governor If Necessary

Ever since the Legislature passed the deficit reduction plan last week, Governor Paterson has repeatedly stated that the $2.7 billion included in the plan is insufficient to balance the current state budget or to meet its cash flow needs and has threatened to withhold State Aid payments to schools coming due on December 15th. A limited delay of the payment that includes general aid, excess cost and VLT would be difficult but potentially understandable - an undefined delay that could drag beyond the school year would be devastating for many districts and very likely illegal.  read more »

As times change, professions evolve. The characteristics that define many professions – such as what professionals need to do, and what they need to know – are much different now than they were just a few years ago. This is certainly true of the school business management profession. Sample Lettters Opposing MTA Mobility Tax and 2008-2009 School Aid Freeze

As important issues affecting school district finances reach critical mass, NYSASBO has prepared the two attached advocacy letters for members to use in communicating with policymakers.

The first is a letter opposes the Mobility Tax component of the MTA bailout plan. We especially urge school business officials in Westchester County to contact Senator Suzi Oppenheimer. Her position is critical in the ultimate resolution of the MTA issue.  read more »
